So I have a lot of friends who consider themselves “liberal.” We get together at church and on Friday nights each week for a dinner. We have good spirited discussions on issues of the day with me usually taking the libertarian side of the issues with them taking the liberal side. From what I can tell, it seems “liberal” means to them whatever position the NY Times and Washington Post take on an issue. I read those paper’s editorials and you can hear almost word for word the things they read that week.
But the new SCOTUS ruling doing away with affirmative action in the college selection process is confusing them. They know as good liberals that they are being instructed to think this was a bad decision by an out of control Supreme Court (“not a normal supreme court” - Joe Biden.) But when pressed they are less sure. One or two flat out said they support the decision. Shocking that: A) they believe that, and B) they would say it out loud.
Others demure. When I tell these others things their newspapers-of-record won’t tell them, like the Court left open the ability of colleges to consider “race” in admissions on an individual basis versus a color-of-their skin basis, they don’t believe me. It is somewhat similar to me asking a long bit ago what they thought of the Hunter Biden laptop issue. A Harvard and Columbia educated friend said with a straight face, “what laptop?” He literally had never heard of it.
They are being fed propaganda hook, line, and sinker. And they gobble it down. But at least in this case there are glimmers that all may not be well in woke-land. One hopes that bit by bit they will begin to think for themselves on issues and relegate the old newspapers to the fish-wrapping duty they deserve.
